| Little Brother Ryan at our Holiday Party |

Big Brothers Big Sisters held our annual holiday party for all of our Bigs, Littles, Ready To Be Matched children and their families on Saturday, December 12th. The event was hosted by The Business Club at Adirondack Community College. We had great crafts, food, gifts and a special visit from Santa! It was a great way to celebrate this holiday season and all we are thankful for! BIG thanks to The Business Club for sponsoring this year's holiday party. Season's greetings to all of our friends, families and colleagues that generously support our mission.
Big Night of Thanks

On November 12, 2009 Big Brothers Big Sisters honored Ray Agnew, Dan Miner and Pete Cloutier, Alice Ripley and Ross MacIntosh at our third annual Big Night Of Thanks celebration. This night is one of our most anticipated events where we are able to come together to thank all of our community friends, families and colleagues who support our organization. With their support, Big Brothers Big Sisters is positively impacting the lives of hundreds of children in our community.
Our first award of the evening was presented to our “Honorary Big Brothers of the Year.” Dave Lebel, Board Member and Bowl For Kids’ Sake Chairperson was honored to present the award to Dan Miner and Pete Cloutier from 98.5 WCKM’s The Morning Club. Dan & Pete and Regional Radio Group have been strong supporters of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Southern Adirondacks for over 10 years. With great delight Dan and Pete accepted this honor and vowed to continue to recognize and support our worthy cause.
The next award was the “Community Mentor of the Year” and was presented to Ray Agnew, Vice President of Community Relations at Glens Falls Hospital. Agnew is a currently involved with many groups including but not limited to: Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Rotary International (Past President) and American Society of Composers and Authors and Publishers. Agnew was recognized as the 2008 Rotarian of the Year (Glens Falls) and 2008 Rotary Humanitarian of the Year (District 7190). Furthermore, in 2008, Ray selflessly donated a kidney to a colleague.
The final awards presented were our Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year. Our Big Sister of the Year was awarded to Alice Ripley. Alice has been matched with Little Sister, Sabrina since January of 2004 in what Little Sister Sabrina describes as the “Big Sister I never had.” Our Big Brother of the Year is Ross MacIntosh. Ross has been matched with Little Brother Jeremy for over 4 ½ years, after Jeremy’s dying father called looking for “another man to bring back his happy little boy.” Both Little Sister Sabrina and Little Brother Jeremy would tell you that they now are happier and more successful than they ever would have been without their Bigs.
There were many Little Moments that turned into Big Magic over the course of the night and it was clear that the evening left many feeling as reinvigorated ambassadors for the vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters: to create brighter futures, better schools and stronger communities. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone that is helping us change perspectives and change lives.

our impact on children
Bigs and Littles have fun together — and create memories that last a lifetime. We call it “Little moments … Big magic.” Research points to the powerful, positive, lasting impact Bigs have on children’s lives. Littles are:
-
52% less likely to skip school
-
46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
-
More likely to get along with their families and peers

real life stories
Big Brother Joe always encouraged his Little Brother Aldo to strive for academic excellence and to take school more seriously. Throughout high school, Joe stuck by his commitment to inspire and help his Little Brother navigate the challenges, and his efforts paid off handsomely. Today, Aldo is a successful college student.
